Up and Over Garage Doors.
Up and over garage doors are single-panel doors that tilt up and slide horizontally into the garage roof on a counterbalanced mechanism. They are mechanically simple, cost effective, and the most familiar UK garage door style. Best for traditional homes and longer driveways. Wolverine fits Garador and Hörmann up and overs in steel, timber and GRP across the Thames Valley.

The detail
Up and Over Garage Doors, properly explained.
What does an up-and-over garage door cost in 2026?
A basic single-skin steel up-and-over costs £850 to £1,400 supplied and fitted including VAT, making it the cheapest way to replace a garage door like for like. Higher-spec and timber-effect versions run £1,400 to £1,900, and doubles £1,400 to £2,800. Fitting takes around three to six hours. Full market context in the 2026 price guide.
Canopy or retractable: which mechanism?
A canopy door pivots up and forward so roughly a third of the panel sits proud of the frame when open — simple, spring-assisted and the most common gear on single doors. A retractable door runs fully back into the garage on horizontal tracks, which trades a little drive-through width for smoother running and is the right gear when you plan to automate. We fit both and recommend one at survey based on your opening and your plans.
Can you automate an up-and-over door later?
Yes — up-and-over doors on retractable gear take an operator well. Adding electric operation to a new door typically adds £400 to £700; retrofitting later runs £500 to £750 supplied and fitted, with our operators starting at £605. Details on the automated electric garage doors page, or see whether your existing door can be automated.
What are the trade-offs?
Standard single-skin up-and-overs have effectively no insulation — a U-value around 6.0 to 7.0 W/m²K, with foam-backed versions at 3.0 to 4.5 — and the swing arc uses a little driveway. If the garage is heated or attached to the house, compare an insulated door before deciding; if you park tight to the door, a roller avoids the arc entirely.
How are up-and-over doors sized?
Up-and-over doors are sized between the frame, not to the brick opening — order a 7'0" × 6'6" door and that is the panel size, with the frame adding to the overall footprint. The most common UK single is 7'0" × 6'6" (2134 × 1981mm). Let the free survey measure it properly, or read the conventions in our sizes guide.

- Do you remove the old door?
- Yes, every quote includes removal and ethical disposal of your existing door. We recycle the steel and aluminium where possible.
- Can you automate my existing door?
