How much heat does an insulated garage door actually keep in?
An uninsulated single-skin steel door has a U-value of around 7.0 W/m²K; a well-insulated sectional achieves 1.0 to 1.4 W/m²K — comparable to a good double-glazed window — cutting heat loss through the door by roughly 80%. Insulated rollers sit at 2.0 to 3.5 W/m²K because the guide rails create thermal bridges. The lower the number, the warmer the garage. Which insulated door type should you choose?
Choose an insulated sectional if warmth is the priority: 40–45mm foam-filled panels give the best insulation of any standard door type. Choose an insulated roller where headroom is tight or you park hard up against the door. Choose an insulated side-hinged pair if you walk in and out more than you drive in.
When is insulation worth the extra £700?
Insulation typically adds £700 or more over a comparable single-skin door. It earns its keep when the garage is attached to the house, or used as a gym, workshop or home office, because it stabilises the temperature and cuts draughts. For a detached garage that stores a lawnmower, a single-skin door is usually the sensible buy — and we will tell you so at survey.
What panel thickness do you need?
Panel cores run from 20mm to 42mm of polyurethane foam. The reference door in this class is Hörmann's LPU42, with 42mm panels, and it is what most insulated sectional quotes are built around. Thickness is only half the story: frame seals and threshold strips matter as much as the core, because an insulated panel with poor seals still leaks warm air at every edge.
What sizes do insulated doors come in?
Made to measure. The most common UK single opening is 7'0" × 6'6" (2134 × 1981mm) and the classic double is 14'0" × 7'0" (4267 × 2134mm); insulated doors are manufactured to your exact opening rather than forced into a standard.
