Many homes from the new-town decades have a single garage, either attached to the house or in a nearby block, and many still have an older steel up-and-over door. The most common UK single size is 7'0" by 6'6", and a standard opening gives you the widest choice of door. A like-for-like up-and-over keeps costs down. An insulated sectional is warmer and quieter, and because it opens straight up you can park right up to it. A roller coils into a box above the opening, needing around 300mm of headroom or about 205mm for a compact model, and keeps the ceiling clear for storage.
Where the garage is really a store or workshop, a side-hinged pair lets you open one leaf to get a bike or the mower out without lifting the whole door, and it needs no headroom at all. Larger homes often have a double garage: a double opening can take one wide door or two singles either side of a central pier, like the twin rollers above. Most door types can be automated, and adding electric operation when the door is fitted costs less than retrofitting it later.
Springs, cables, rollers, tracks and electric openers are the usual culprits.
