Where we work in and around Reading
We cover the whole town and its suburbs: Caversham and Emmer Green north of the river; Tilehurst, Southcote and Calcot to the west; Whitley and the south of the town; and Earley, Lower Earley and Woodley to the east, which sit in Wokingham Borough. Shinfield and Pangbourne are covered too. Neighbouring towns have their own pages, including Wokingham, Henley-on-Thames, Newbury and Thatcham.
Recent jobs in and around Reading
Our installation round-ups record where each door went. In Reading itself we have fitted a blue Garador up-and-over for a customer who wanted the door to make a statement, a matching pair of grey Garador up-and-overs on a semi-detached house, and twin Teckentrup sectionals in a Rosewood foil finish on a detached property in south Reading. Not every job is a new door: we also realigned a Henderson door in Reading that had come off its tracks, replacing worn rollers and adjusting the spring tension, which saved the customer the cost of a replacement.
Around the town, the round-ups include a dark blue Europa insulated roller in Caversham that replaced an up-and-over with a broken spring and corroded panels, a Teckentrup sectional in Anthracite Grey in Caversham, a Teckentrup sectional in Umbra Grey with a Georgian woodgrain finish in Tilehurst, a Ruby Red Garador Carlton up-and-over in Tilehurst and a white Hörmann canopy door in Woodley.
Reading homes and the doors that suit them
Reading's housing runs from Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the centre, through interwar semis, to newer estates on the edges of town, and many older garages still have a steel up-and-over door. Where the garage is attached to the house, an insulated sectional door is the usual upgrade: its 40 to 45mm foam-filled panels make it the best-insulated type as standard, and because it opens straight up you can park right up to it. If you need the ceiling for storage, a roller door coils into a box above the opening and takes almost no room inside the garage. For a budget like-for-like swap, a canopy up-and-over is simple and reliable, though about a third of the panel sits proud of the frame when it is open.
Most of these door types can be automated. Sectional and roller doors are built for electric operation, and adding it when the door is fitted costs less than retrofitting it later. See our electric garage doors page for the options.
Common garage door faults we fix in Reading
Springs, cables, rollers, tracks and electric openers are the usual culprits. We repair most makes and models, including doors fitted by other companies, and we replace springs in pairs so the tension matches. We repair Hörmann SupraMatic, LiftMaster, Somfy and most other electric openers, re-pair lost remotes and fit replacement locks with new keys. If your door is crooked, unusually heavy or has a loose cable, stop using it and keep clear rather than trying to lift it or pulling the manual release. The repairs section on this page lists typical costs, and our repairs page covers every fault we fix.
What a survey in Reading involves
A survey is free and there is no obligation. We do not run a showroom, so we come to you: we measure the opening properly, check headroom, side room and fixing points, talk through how you use the garage, and bring colour and finish samples to hold against your brickwork in daylight. You then get three written supplied-and-fitted prices including VAT, a budget, mid and premium option for the same opening, with no deposit taken on the day. Removal and disposal of the old door is included, and a standard sectional or up-and-over replacement usually takes four to six hours on a single visit.
