Slough homes and the doors that suit them
Slough has grown in waves. Britwell, in the north-west of the town, was built by the London County Council in the 1950s to rehouse Londoners, and its first tenants arrived in 1956. Homes from that era often have a single garage, sometimes in a block, and many of those still have a steel up-and-over door that has rusted, dented or started letting in draughts. A new up-and-over is the simplest replacement. Where the garage adjoins the house, an insulated door is warmer and quieter.
Where a newer home has an integral garage, the door is effectively part of the house wall, so insulation matters more. A sectional door is the best-insulated type as standard, and its panels park under the ceiling so you can drive right up to it. A roller door coils into a box above the opening instead, leaving the ceiling free; it needs around 300mm of headroom, or about 205mm for a compact model. Both can be automated, and adding electric operation when the door is fitted costs less than retrofitting it later. If the garage is mainly a store or workshop, a side-hinged pair lets you open one leaf at a time.
Repair or replace?
With an older door, the first question is often whether to repair it at all. The rule we use: a door under 15 years old with a mechanical fault, such as a spring, cable or motor, with intact panels and parts still made, is usually worth repairing. A door over 20 years old with rusted, dented or warped panels and obsolete parts, or one with several faults at once, is usually worth replacing, especially if you also want insulation, automation or better security. We will tell you honestly which side of that line your door is on, even when it means a smaller job for us.
Common garage door faults we fix in Slough
Springs, cables, rollers, tracks and electric openers are the usual culprits. Springs are replaced in pairs so the tension matches. We repair Hörmann SupraMatic, LiftMaster, Somfy and most other electric openers, re-pair lost or faulty remotes, fit replacement locks with new keys and replace perished seals. If your door has dropped on one side, feels unusually heavy or has a loose cable, stop using it, keep clear and do not pull the manual release: springs and cables can still be under tension. Typical costs are listed in the repairs section on this page.
What a survey in Slough involves
The survey is free and there is no obligation. We measure the opening properly, check headroom, side room and fixing points, and talk through how you use the garage. We bring colour and finish samples so you can see them against your own brickwork in daylight. You then get three written supplied-and-fitted prices including VAT, a budget, mid and premium option for the same opening, with no deposit taken on the day. Removal and disposal of the old door is included in every quote, and a standard sectional or up-and-over replacement usually takes four to six hours on a single visit.
