The older streets around the Market Place and Rose Street have period houses where a garage, if there is one, was usually added later. Openings in older properties are rarely square, which is why we measure before we quote. On the established estates, many homes have a single garage that still has an older canopy up-and-over door. A new up-and-over is the simplest swap; an insulated sectional or a roller opens straight up, so you can park right up to the door and nothing swings out over the drive.
On newer developments such as Montague Park, Matthewsgreen and Arborfield Green, where a garage is integral or shares a wall with the house, an insulated door with a polyurethane foam core of 20 to 42mm is worth considering, and adding electric operation when the door is fitted costs less than retrofitting it later. If you would rather walk in and out than drive in, a side-hinged pair lets you open one leaf at a time and needs no headroom above the opening.
Springs, cables, rollers, tracks and electric openers are the usual culprits. We repair most makes and models, including doors fitted by other companies, and we replace springs in pairs so the tension matches. If your door has dropped on one side, feels much heavier than usual or has a slack cable, stop using it and keep clear: do not pull the manual release or try to lift it, because springs and cables can still be under tension. We also repair remotes that have stopped working, openers that run but do not move the door, and locks that will not turn, with new keys supplied.
