The gear type decides it. Up-and-over doors on retractable gear take an operator well; canopy gear usually needs a conversion kit or a gear swap, which the survey confirms. Sectional and roller doors are built for electric operation, so on those it is normally a motor replacement or upgrade rather than a question of whether it can be done. Side-hinged doors can be motorised as well, with arm gear driving each leaf — typically around £800, depending on the gear the opening needs.
On cost: a retrofit operator runs £500 to £750 supplied and fitted, and our operators start at £605 including the boom, remotes and programming. If you are buying a new door anyway, adding automation at the same time typically costs £400 to £700 — cheaper than coming back later.
