Anthracite Grey vs Black Garage Doors
Anthracite grey and black are the two most popular dark garage door colours. We compare them side by side to help you decide.
Anthracite grey and black are far and away the two most popular dark colours we fit. They look similar at first glance, but in practice they create quite different effects on the front of a property. Here we compare the two to help you make the right choice.
Anthracite Grey, RAL 7016
Anthracite grey is a very dark charcoal with a subtle blue-grey undertone. It is the single most popular garage door colour in the UK and has been for several years. Its appeal lies in its versatility, it works with almost every type of brickwork, from red to buff to grey.
In bright sunlight, anthracite grey reads as a dark grey. In overcast conditions or in shade, it can appear almost black. This chameleon quality is part of its appeal, it is bold without being stark.
Anthracite grey is also the standard colour for most modern window frames, fascias and guttering, which makes it easy to coordinate the front of a property. If your windows are already anthracite grey, matching the garage door is a straightforward way to create a cohesive look.
Black, RAL 9005 (Jet Black)
Jet black (RAL 9005) is a true, deep black with no undertone. It is a bolder, more definitive choice than anthracite grey and creates a strong visual contrast against lighter brickwork.
Black works particularly well on modern, contemporary properties with clean lines. It also suits traditional homes where a strong contrast is desired, white render with black doors is a classic combination.
One practical consideration is that black shows dust, fingerprints and minor imperfections more readily than anthracite grey. In direct sunlight, black surfaces also absorb more heat, though this is rarely a concern with well-insulated doors.
How They Compare Side by Side
When you place them next to each other, the difference is clear. Anthracite grey is softer and more nuanced; black is definitive and high-contrast. Most customers who choose anthracite grey are looking for a modern, understated upgrade. Those who choose black want a strong statement.
What About Other Dark Options?
If anthracite grey feels too dark and black too stark, consider Slate Grey (RAL 7015) a lighter alternative that retains a modern feel. For something warmer, Dark Grey (RAL 7011) has a slightly brown undertone. Both are available from most manufacturers we work with.
Our Recommendation
If your window frames are anthracite grey, match them. If your property has a contemporary design with contrasting white or light-coloured walls, black can look stunning. When in doubt, we can bring samples to your property so you can see both colours against your brickwork in natural light.
