Sectional Garage Door or Roller Garage Door, What's the Difference?

Sectional and roller garage doors are two of the most popular choices for homeowners upgrading their garage. Both open vertically, meaning no swing-out onto the driveway, but the way they work, look and fit is quite different. Here we break down the key factors to help you decide which is right for your home.

How They Operate

A roller garage door is made up of narrow aluminium slats that curl into a compact drum housed above the opening. When you press the remote, the slats roll up neatly and sit in a box at the top of the opening.

A sectional garage door consists of wider horizontal panels (typically four or five) that hinge upward and slide along tracks fitted to the ceiling of the garage. The door stores flat against the garage ceiling when open.

Both types are almost always electrically operated, but the mechanism is fundamentally different, one coils, the other lifts and slides.

Design and Aesthetics

Sectional doors offer far more panel design variety. You can choose from smooth, ribbed, Georgian, woodgrain, micro-rib, centre-rib and more. Glazed sections are also available. Roller doors, by contrast, have a uniform slatted appearance, clean and modern, but with less scope for customisation.

Both are available in a wide range of colours, including RAL colour matching and wood-effect foil finishes.

Security

Both door types offer excellent security. Neither has visible handles or external locks, making forced entry difficult. Sectional doors benefit from multi-point locking and reinforced panel sections. Roller doors interlock when closed and sit in steel guide rails. In both cases, electric operation adds a further layer of security, as the motor resists manual lifting.

Sizing

Roller doors are available up to approximately 5.2 metres wide, making them suitable for most single and double garages. Sectional doors, however, can span up to 8 metres, making them the better choice for wider openings, triple garages or barn-style conversions.

Which Should You Choose?

If ceiling space is limited, a roller door is the better option because it coils into a compact head box. If you want the broadest choice of designs, better insulation, or have a particularly wide opening, a sectional door is likely the way to go.
